Working Smarter Not Harder…What Does It Mean?

Posted by:

I have to tell you…that statement of “You Should Work Smarter Not Harder”..use to really annoy me…

In fact I’d go as far to say it use to really “Aggravate Me Off”

I would have preferred it if people would have just called me Dumb to my face, rather than wrap it up in another trendy statement like “Work Smarter Not Harder”.

For a long time I operated as a technician in my business…Furniture Removals.

Now…I’d spent some time in the corporate sector in transport and logistics so I thought I was different..but really I was just a Technician…moving peoples furniture from Point A to Point B.

If I wasn’t so stressed and tired I probably should have asked myself…What’s The Point In Doing It?

Back to “Smarter Not Harder”…

I joined the Grow Business Grow Boardroom Programme in 2002…

At the time I was doing ‘OK’…as a technician in my business but I knew that to grow to the next level I needed a better way and also I needed a mentor to help me get there…

My mentor’s name was George Bakrnchev…the Founder of the Grow Business Grow Boardroom Programme…he’s still my mentor today…16 years later…

I think it’s important that everyone in business has a mentor…someone external to your business that can tell you how it is…listen to you…and then help you get to the next level.

It’s the role I play today to many businesses and it’s a role that I take very seriously…

I remember speaking with George about this “smarter not harder” concept…and really giving it to him saying that people just say that and no-one has actually come up with a definition of what that means…so business owners…just like me choose to work harder…because it’s what we know and it’s the habit we’ve created.

George smiled back at me…which is always a good sign…and said leave it with me..

Not too long after that I got a call from George and he asked me to come and have a coffee with him up in Noosa…here on the Sunshine Coast.

He’d literally locked himself away in a hotel for a week working on the business…and he created the world’d first Business Formula for “Working Smarter Not Harder”

So here it is…see what you think…

The Formula is 24-170™…

Simply it has Four Performance Standards for a Business Owner to Progress Towards..

  1. Work a Maximum of 24 Hours Per Week
  2. Take a Minimum of 170 Days off Per Year
  3. Have Increasing Quarterly Profits
