When Is A Minute Not Really A Minute?

Posted by:

Objectively time is constant. A minute is a minute. But when we have a lot to do, it usually feels like we have less time…

RESULTS:
Now a study finds an interesting wrinkle in time: when we busy ourselves with selfless tasks, time seems to expand…

The work will be published in the journal Psychological Science.

Researchers interrupted more than 200 students in class and asked them to complete different five-minute tasks….

Some had to cross out the letter “e” in pages of text. Others wrote a letter to a sick child…

When surveyed afterward, the group that wrote letters perceived themselves to have more time in general than those who did the crossing out…

In another experiment one group of subjects were given a period of free time to do whatever they wanted, while another group had to do something for someone else…

Those who did something selflessly perceived themselves as having more time than those with no obligations…

Those subjects also reported a stronger sense of personal power and effectiveness…

IMPLICATIONS:
If we don’t use up our time with activities we enjoy and value, it seems we end up feeling like we don’t have enough of it…

Acknowledgment for this research goes to Christie Nicholson.

Grow Business Grow ® STRATGEY:
Forget about team building exercises…if you really want your team to feel connected and have plenty of time get them to do a selfless task…

ONE IDEA: Head over to the local city soup kitchen and serve a meal to the needy as a whole team…this selfless task will give everyone the sense of what it is like to have plenty of time on your hands while discovering the ‘human’ side of your colleagues…now that will get you all connected better…

ANOTHER IDEA: Never, NEVER get people to do tasks that bore them…they will always complain that they didn’t have time to finish the task…so either make it fun or tie in what they do with a charitable end result…

At www.B1G1.com you can pick a project that your team can support…

For example: “If we deliver this order in time, 25 kids will get educated for a month by our company!”

Our way of doing things is unique and it’s why it produces unique results for our clients…

We would love the opportunity to help you clear your head on what is the right way for you to accelerate your business…
