Did You Know That How ‘You Smell’ Can Affect The Growth Of Your Business?

A recent study finds that we can influence others through chemical signals delivered by the way we smell…

I’m not sure about you but I actually got turned off buying a computer from a sales person based on their smell…(maybe a big plus for internet sales here)…

It wasn’t a bad smell…it’s just that I could sense something desperate about the sales person …

He presented well, but the more he spoke the more I smelt fear or at least I got the sense that I should not trust him…but I could never understand why…turns out the business shut their doors the next month…

What should you be aware of, both as a seller and as a buyer?

Pheromones: they’re those chemical signals often associated with attraction. But there are many chemical signals we give off—including ones that might signal alarm, aggression or other emotions…says Christie Nicholson…

For example, take fear. If sweat contains compounds associated with fear, could someone smelling the sweat of a frightened person himself or herself wind up experiencing fear?

To find out, researchers had male subjects watch two movies. One was scary, and the other made viewers feel disgusted. The researchers then collected the participants’ sweat…

Female subjects then smelled the sweat, while the scientists recorded their facial expressions. And the women who smelled “fear sweat” actually produced fearful facial expressions. While those who smelled the “disgust sweat” made disgusted faces…

The inference is that the chemical compounds impelled the female subjects to remotely experience the same emotions felt by the sweaty males. The study is in the journal Psychological Science. [Jasper H. B. de Groot et al, Chemosignals Communicate Human Emotions]

So despite our lack of conscious awareness of interpersonal chemical communication, it seems that we nevertheless do physically and psychologically process such chemical signals…

The researchers note that this study provides evidence that communication is not limited to language and visual cues: even we rational humans can become “emotionally synchronized” via scent.

So what’s the key?

Never go into a meeting or a sales process under high fear…they will smell it and will either take advantage of you or reject you…

What can you do about fear?
Meditation or some form of visualization prior to your meeting helps settle your nerves enormously and more importantly it trains your mind and body on how to react when the ‘real’ meeting takes place…luckily for you and me, the brain can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality…so use it to your advantage…it’s in your DNA…
