Have You Got A License To Sin?

Posted by:

This study was published in the journal ‘Addiction’… it makes a lot of sense once you see the logic and there are great business strategies that can be developed as a result…

‘Check This Research Out’ …

Researchers at National Sun Yat-Sen University (Taiwan) gave 73 smokers a sugar pill…half of them were mislead to believe it was a vitamin C supplement…

RESULTS:

Those who took the vitamin C supplement smoked twice as much as those who knew they took a sugar pill…

IMPLICATIONS:

The researchers concluded that consciously or subconsciously the participants felt that the healthy activity entitled them to smoke more…this behaviour is commonly known as ‘the licensing effect’

Psychologist, Nina Mazar of the University of Toronto and author of The Green Products Study said “This credit (“I did good today”) can then subsequently be used to engage in self-indulgent or selfish behaviours without feeling bad about it”…

I bet you’ve seen this in action: the person who is on a ‘get fit’ campaign is also the one most likely to end up at the coffee shop after a workout only to order a ‘coffee and cake’…

Grow Business Grow® STRATEGY:
If I was a coffee shop, I’d hook up with a gymnasium/health club and offer all members a ‘reward your workout’ card and create a ‘healthy coffee and cake’ combo that is high in fibre, protein and anti-oxidants… this is how I would be getting the benefit of what the gym member was going to do anyway: eat!…

Knowing about ‘the licensing effect’ might just help you create a big point of difference for your business and in the process create a new buying habit for your customers…

Our way of doing things is unique and it’s why it produces unique results for our clients…
