Don’t Pay People To Stress You Out!

In business, the biggest complexities in your life will be people – not machines or systems, but people. The more you have, the more you will need to look after.

This article is based around a frequently asked question I get from my Boardroom Clients: ‘How do we grow our businesses without growing our people headaches?’

This is a subject that I know very well.

I literally lived it until I found the simple solution…and I’ll share that with you very soon.

I was the Ultimate Technician but knew deep down that I was burning out and couldn’t grow the business like I wanted to unless I made a change…I had to “Sack Myself”

I’ve had many conversations where I’ve had to tell business owners that they need to sack themselves in order for their business to really start growing…

You have to simplify before you multiply!

Once enrolled in the Grow Business Grow Boardroom Programme my business exploded.

We went from me and a small truck to a fleet of 6 removal trucks and 12 employees in less than 12 quarters…all company owned.

Every ninety days we were breaking records – bigger average dollar sales, bigger referrals, fewer breakages, quicker turnaround times, higher up sells and cross sells, and higher net profits.

The business grew fast. We were employing people faster than we could have imagined. Even though we had a good hiring system, at times, it felt like the only recruitment question we were asking was, ‘Can you start today?’

The day you decide to grow your business is also the day you decide to increase the complexities in your life.

One of the reasons I’m so passionate about The Grow Business Grow Boardroom Programme is that I was a client of the George Bakrnchev’s, the founder of Grow Business Grow 15 years ago.

As we grew we were going to George with different problems.

In the early days, it was about growing the business, getting more clients, and getting the average dollar sale up.

As it grew it became all about people problems. I showed him my monthly salaries bill to impress upon him how big my issues were. And I wanted to share with him how stressful running the business had become due to having so many different personalities in the team, and how some of them threatened the very existence of the business.

I was totally stressed out by it all. And that’s when George hit me with a BFO (That’s a Blinding Flash Of The Obvious) I was paying people to stress me out!

What an absurd idea. Imagine paying people to stress you out!

Who in their right mind would do that?

It never starts that way, of course. It just ends up that way, UNLESS you do something to change it. I agreed that paying people to stress me out was a stupid idea.

We applied a strategy I learnt in The Boardroom…

It was one of the Reverse Thinking Strategies. George asked me to ‘reverse’ the negative into a positive.

Instead of paying people to stress us out, we reversed it to, ‘Paying people to remove our stress.’

Out of this grew our businesses motto: ‘The stress free movers’.

Who wouldn’t want to move home or office with a company that guarantees a stress free move, right?

But – and it is a big BUT – for the business to live up to its motto, the people behind the motto had to be living the stress-free culture too.

This is was no easy task. Business is a lot like family, everyone wants perfect harmonious relationships within the family, but it’s not always possible.

The difference in business is that you get to lay down the rules of the game and what is acceptable and what isn’t. Don’t pay people to stress you out.

If people are not coachable, don’t waste your or their time. People who are not happy in an environment end up getting sick or at least will make others sick.

You owe it to them to help them lead a more fuller and richer life. ‘Free up their future’ – let them go and play someone else’s game.

They’ll thank you for it later once all the dust has settled and you won’t have to work the 8th day of the week in order to pick up all of the work that hasn’t been done.

Apply The Grow Business Grow Boardroom Strategy:
Don’t pay people to stress you out. Decide on your ‘rules of the game’ and what is acceptable and what isn’t acceptable.

It’s how McDonalds take teenagers that won’t make their beds at home and gets them to run multi-million dollar businesses.

The teenagers are the same…but the difference is that McDonalds have invested in creating systems for those teenagers to be coached in.
